Our Story
Free Jamaica Bay Kayaking in Rockaway Beach and Riis Landing!
The Gateway Bike & Boathouse was founded in 2008 as a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization to provide free kayaking on Jamaica Bay.
We hope you find the time to visit one of our two boathouses and experience the natural beauty of the Bay while enjoying some fresh air and exercise.
Our fleet includes "single" and "double" sit-on-top kayaks, which are very stable. We also have stand-up paddle boards (SUPs), paddles and personal floatation devices (PFDs). Just bring a bathing suit, sunscreen, bottled water and a smile.
Try one of our many activities including “Open” paddling, guided marsh tours, sunset paddles, marsh clean-ups, plantings and ecological tours. Consider increasing your fun even more while giving back to the community by joining our all-volunteer staff. The best part of paddling is the people you meet!

Community Boathouse empowers New Yorkers of all backgrounds to discover and enjoy Jamaica Bay through free, welcoming kayaking programs and community events. We connect people to the water, each other, and the natural beauty of our urban estuary - promoting physical health, environmental stewardship, and a deeper sense of belonging in New York City’s vibrant waterfront.
